History of Shigaraki-ware:

Approximately fifty years ago, Emperor Shōmu used clay from this area to make roof tiles during the construction of the Shigaraki palaces. This marked the beginning of Shigaraki pottery. Shigaraki pottery developed rapidly and, supported by the rich clay grounds, it grew into one of Japan's major pottery centers.
