They still function and power on, but they no longer get support from Amazon. Therefore they cannot sign in, buy new books, or sync books from any Amazon account. They cannot be used for Kindle Unlimited, either, as Amazon does not support these devices any longer.
These will exclusively need to be plugged into a computer and manually loaded with your Amazon ebooks.
They all still charge and can hold a charge, but they are smaller capacity batteries than the modern Paperwhites.
No backlight and no touch capabilities.
