These copper half penny tokens were issued by the Bank of Upper Canada between 1850 and 1857 due to a coinage shortage in the colony.
The obverse (front) of the coin features Saint George slaying a dragon on horseback, with the date below.
The reverse (back) typically shows the Coat of Arms of Upper Canada, though it's not visible in this image.
The Bank of Upper Canada was authorized to mint copper coins in 1850 and contracted with firms in London and Birmingham for their production.
Much of the later issues, particularly from 1857, were acquired by the colonial government when the currency system changed to decimal in 1858 and were subsequently melted down.
