Historical Use: These metal tokens were used as fare payment on CTA buses and trains in Chicago, Illinois, for several decades.
Introduction and Discontinuation: The CTA introduced its own tokens in 1950. They were discontinued in 1959, then revived in 1969 with the adoption of the exact fare system on buses, and eventually phased out in favor of magnetic stripe Transit Cards starting in 1997, with full elimination by May 31, 1999.
