Hairy Ball Milkweed (Gomphocarpus physocarpus) is one of the most unique milkweeds you can grow. Plants reach 4–6 ft tall, with white star-shaped flowers that draw in butterflies and bees, followed by fuzzy, balloon-like seed pods that always spark conversation. Monarch butterflies rely on milkweed as a host plant, making this variety especially valuable for their survival.
Best planted in fall so nature can cold-stratify the seeds, or start in spring after chilling them in the fridge for a few weeks. Once established, they thrive in full sun, need only moderate water, and are easy to harvest for future seed. The unusual pods are also popular in floral arrangements.
