“In sailing, "full and by" is a traditional term describing a point of sail where the sails are kept full (catching the maximum amount of wind) while sailing as close to the wind as possible without the sails luffing (flapping). This term perfectly describes the scene in the etching, where the sailboat appears to be efficiently cutting through the water with its sails optimally trimmed.”

“Illustrator and etcher/engraver Frederick L. Owen (1869–1959) devoted his talents almost exclusively to nautical subjects. During the 1930s he became particularly well known for his drypoint engravings of tall masted ships which were published in limited signed editions of one hundred impressions by the Madison Avenue firm of Schwartz Galleries. Today his fine prints are included in many major American collection.”
